1781: Slave in Massachusetts Sues for Freedom, and Wins

In 1781, Mum Bett, a Massachusetts slave whose husband fought in the revolutionary war, sued for her freedom, and won. She renames herself Elizabeth Freeman. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling, in Freeman’s favor, found slavery to be inconsistent with the 1780 Massachusetts State Constitution.
